He brought to his Manual of Industrial Organisation an enormously wide experience of different industries and of organising approaches. His work is informed by a deep practicality and a clear sense of class politics. That he went on to lead the US Communist Party in the difficult years of the early Cold War testifies to his understanding that the class struggle is conducted at its highest level in the clash between actually existing capitalism and its antithesis in the existence of working class state power and socialism.
